I can't answer whether it fixes live TV. I run a local MythTV without
tuners, to watch what was recorded on my remote backend that does the
recording. So I can't check that.

As to modding the menu, I guess the mythfrontend entry
in /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menudefs.hook is a place to start. I can't
really help much as I'm more of a gnome DE user, and there we can just
use alacarte (I don't know if alacarte works with the menus in
Mythbuntu, though it should, as they are standard xdg. You can try
installing alacarte with "apt-get install alacarte". It pulls in a load
of other stuff, which is why I'm not going to try it out.
