Hmm, I'm kind of confused by what you're saying. It is true that HD is
in mpeg format already. It's all mpeg2 on my myth machine, where I use
a HVR1250 to do all the digital cable recording. But, digital and HD
are one and the same in terms of format as I understand it. The way
comcast works for me is I have digital channels that can have any type
of bitrate or resolution programming. My machine just plops them onto
the hard disk regardless of whether it's HD or not: all digital gets
treated the same.
About the encryption issue: in my area comcast encrypts everything
except the local networks and public TV. So my digital cable channels
that I can record are NBC, Fox, CBS, ABC, CW, PBS, etc. They don't
even leave TNT-HD or USA-HD unencrypted, which is nutty if you ask me.
If you absolutely want to record all your encrypted comcast channels I
believe the best solution right now is to get a cable box and the new
Hauppauge HD-PVR box that can accept component input. The way I used
to do it was use the Svideo input of my PVR-150 and output the cable
box to it.
Cheers,
Raphael
