It seems that it is indeed Windows users condemned to use stone knives
and bear skins. On further reading, the issue is in playback, not
recording; files chopped to remove the non-5.1 portion at the start
play back with the AC3 track. Since MythTV's internal player can
handle audio track types changing during playback it shouldn't be a
problem for us.

(I'm not kidding about the stone knives, by the way. The AVSForum
forum sections dealing with media centers are and always have been
hilarious reading for any MythTV user. Lots of people using the most
baroque, convoluted, and jury-rigged combinations of half-baked tools
to do what we take for granted.)
