Thanks for the hint.  I agree that it would be best to have 100% OSS, or 
else 100% ALSA.  But the driver for my TV card (pcHD-5500 with cx8802 
chipset) wants to put out the sound via ALSA, so I'm going to try the 100% 
ALSA route first, following the suggestion recently posted by jb17bsome.
