Do you really need a window manager? I start mythwelcome from my .xinit file
(which I believe means I don't have a window manager running.) and was fully
expecting lots of focusing issues after reading the wiki, but it's never
been a problem, and as a way of just getting myth up and running it works
quite well.

I don't use mplayer a lot though, but it does seem to work ok.
