They usually place a filter on the drop to your house to filter all
the frequencies the extended analog channels sit on. The rest are
digital and encrypted. Of course more and more areas are going all
digital for all but the OTA channels...

In my old apartment building they didn't bother filtering, so
basically all the apartments had all the analog channels for free, a
cost Comcast "incurred" in providing easy service to the other
apartments in the building. We used DSL and didn't pay for any cable,
but still were able to watch all the analog channels. Incidentally,
that was the apartment I started playing around with MythTV in oh so
many years ago...
