My local linux user group has had various flame wars over these
topics.  The best way to deal with the issue turns out to just let
people be people and let them post the way they want.  Just because
you and I have been around since the early days of the internet does
not mean that we should impose a restriction on progress because it
just happens to be what we are used to.

I don't like HTML formatted posts any more than the next guy, but
there are a lot of people out there that have no idea whether or not
their mail client is composing HTML ... and for the most part, they
aren't interested in learning the intricacies of their mail client. I
would rather help them with a problem than complain about the format
of their posts, imho.

If you want people to be informed of these restrictions, it should be
clearly posted on the sign-up page and it should also be included in
any email they get welcoming them to the list.  Otherwise, it's a
losing battle from the start.
