Thanks Ian.  I had run across this with all my googleing for an answer. 
Unfortunately the unstripped codecs are only available for Intrepid.  I
was sticking with hardy because it is a LTS release, and don't want to
upgrade my mythtv box any more than I have to.

Hopefully this fix will filter down to Hardy as well, or maybe will show
up in backports or something.

Meanwhile, I had to do the conversion in windows with winff (how
humiliating!).
