Ok, i got the hang of this "no top posting now" :)
Anyway, I have found that in the /usr/local/share/mythtv/themes/
dir there are several directories for the OSD themes.
* mythtv at dora:/usr/local/share/mythtv/themes$ ls -d *OSD
Gray-OSD Iulius-OSD Retro-OSD Titivillus-OSD*
In each directory there is a file osd.xml, and if you
comment out the 'container name="status"' stanza
then the next time you start a dvd or recording or livetv,
the volume works without showing anything onscreen. However,
the video position OSD is linked to this same "status"
object, so you lose that as well. All or nothing, I guess.
