I intercept the volume +/- codes from the remote with irexec and pass them
via a script to an IR blaster that adjusts the volume on my receiver. I
also have the codes mapped to mythtv so although the +/-  doesn't change
the volume I get to track roughly where it is by the on screen display.
Every few days I sync them up by comparing the receiver display (which is
too small to see across the room) and the mythtv display.

The same blaster also turns the amp on/off and handles mute:-)
