I think you've misunderstood my original question.

Like your setup, when I start playing a recording, it plays at 1X.
That's good, it's exactly what MythTV should do and what I want it to
do.

However, in the middle of playing a recording, I like to toggle into
time stretch mode for the boring parts; and toggle out of again at the
interesting bits.  There's a single key in mythfrontend to toggle time
stretch on/off.  I can't remember the default key off-hand, I have it
mapped to the "REC" button on my remote.  If I press "Toggle Time
Stretch", it will turn on time stretch at 1.5X, which is the default
setting.  Again, that's exactly what MythTV should do.

However, my frontend is unable to handle 1.5X without stuttering on
occasion.  So what I'd like to do is to have the "Toggle Time Stretch"
button to default to a slightly slower setting (like, say, 1.4X),
which my frontend can handle more easily.
