Yea, I've done most of the obvious stuff and followed those trouble 
shooting guides I could find. No luck, but.

However, I'm going to try the wiki instructions at
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Configuring_Digital_Sound_with_AC3_and_SPDIF

(I have an aversion to wikis. I find them mind numbing ;-) )
