/var/log/mythfrontend.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log are the places to
start diagnosing MythTV playback and X server configuration issues.
Are you using the open source or ATI-provided binary driver for your
video card?

If you don't see anything immediately obvious in the frontend logfile
when you start to play a recording you can start mythfrontend with
extra logging enabled (playback for example, run 'mythfrontend -v
help' for the whole list) whilst debugging the problem.
