Try issuing a depmod -a while booted into the -16 kernel.  If still no luck, try
to manually modprobe it (modprobe nvidia).   If it's not loading properly, look
in /lib/modules/ for multiple .ko's for nvidia.  If there is by chance, that's
likely the cause...
