I've got a core 2 duo 1800mhz (e4300 processor) and it plays hd back just
fine, not even using half of the cpu up. My video card is an nvidia 7300. I
think anything higher is overkill unless you're doing a lot of other things
on the computer. Also, in general, the lower the clock rate, the lower the
power usage and the less heat that is generated for these core 2 duo's. Keep
in mind the heat, as it's sometimes tough to cool an htpc, as in my case.
That's why I went with the coolest processor I could find. Again, any core 2
duo will do hd just fine as I have one of the bottom of the line ones.
