actually, that's not the way the script author is using his script nor is it the way I have mine setup but that could also work. You could send the channel change command, run the check_stb script, if it's a black image, then send the power on and the channel change again and you'd be all good, if it's an image that's not black, then don't do anything more. Good idea. Never thought of that.
