wasn't exactly that hard then was it? ;) j/k

LIRC is actually not too hard to set up if you follow their howto; there
are extensive instructions on LIRC.org The first time I got into LIRC I
used their site as a "user manual" or sorts. It was extremely helpful,
and I didn't find that there was anything missing that I needed to fill
in with other sites. Without the detailed instructions I would have been
totally lost, as I have no clue what's going on when my remote sends
codes to my remote receiver and how the heck the computer interprets them :P

as others have said: options in your window manager (gnome for you most
likely, so it's in the system menu).

backend should auto launch as a script in init. You can also launch it
form the command line with "mythbackend -d"
If you don't have an init script with mythbackend in it, just put that
command I just wrote into your own init script. Here's some info on init
scripts if you don't know about them
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit
though not necessary reading. A quick and dirty way is here:
http://www.fperkins.com/HowToCreateaStartupScriptinDebian.html

The frontend can be launched via a startup command in your session
(under "preferences/sessions") as other have said.

Ahh I remember the joys of struggling over mythtv for the first time
three years ago.
