All I can say is that you have a configuration error that's preventing
you from actually changing OSD themes, as they are all quite different. 
It may be due to a packaging error, so you may want to give details on
your distro.

But, you may also be interested to know that whether or not the OSD
expands across the entire bottom of the screen (as opposed to across the
bottom of the video) depends on your chosen OSD renderer--not the theme.
