If you spell "noob" correctly in the subject line then your post will
show up in the search results when someone else looks for "noob
questions" on the list archive in the future.

Certainly so. I would reckon you could do it with half that - in fact
(although I haven't yet built MythTV) I have a 730mhz Pentium III
earmarked for my backend. I am sure others have posted in the past
that they're using machines of 500mhz and less, and don't recall
reading anything that would rule out my 700mhz processor.
I am expecting to record HD on my 700mhz PC, also (but not play it
back) - if no-one replies correcting me then you can be assured that
this is plenty (in HD the overhead is playback - a backend merely
dumps the data to disk & streams it over the network, far less than
the bandwidth of the harddrive or a 100mBit NIC).
