Good for you. Prebuilt packages are a great thing, but if you have the
interest, ability, and time, going at it on your own helps
tremendously. A few years back I built a system using knoppmyth and it
was great to get me up and running quickly, but I found that I really
had no idea why a lot of things were working the way they were. On
multiple occasions I tried to do things and somehow it broke something
that I wasn't able to repair without starting fresh. End result was
that, after going through that a few times, once I got it up and
running again I was afraid to touch and and just decided to leave it
be. End result is that I was stuck with myth 0.18 far longer than I
should have been.

This time I started from scratch. It took me a long time, but I learn
so much more that way, and I've got the knowledge and confidence to
tweak just about anything on the system without fear of seriously
breaking anything.

As long as you don't get completely frustrated and give up before you
finish, you'll be glad you went this way.
