Okay, thanks for the thoughtful responses.  I don't really care about
channel change times, just being able to watch TV occasionally without
thrashing the disk.  (Again - not really important at all - I just wanted to
understand the issue.)  Originally I was confused because I was seeing
everyone's comments as "channel change is slow because it's buffered, and
it's buffered because that's the way it is".  Now your comments have cleared
up the point that "it's buffered because that enables other features people
want", which makes more sense.
