[mythtv-users] Playback Profiles? WTF?!

That is a good point and I will be retiring this machine eventually but
the fact remains that I was getting acceptable performace with exactly
the same setup (same TV) running 0.20.
The only change to the system was that I upgraded the cpu from 2.67GHz
to 3GHz. 

I would not usually change two things at once (cpu and 0.21) but the new
version of MythTV snuck up on me via Update Manager. I glanced at the
updates on my server and thought they were just patches rather than a
major revision update. It was then that the frontend told me that it
needed to be upgraded because it was no longer compatible with the
backend... and that was all on the night before I got the new CPU.

I will be trying different VGA cards again today and also try reloading
the whole system. I'll let you all know how it goes
