I'll drop my two cents:

I have the 30GB 404 model. Smaller screen, runs Linux, needs codec
pack, etc., same as 504. The device is heavier than an ipod, and the
UI is just awful, but it does the job. Plays videos and music. Bought
mine for a super long trip to Korea, and it was worth every penny.
With low screen brightness, I watched movies on it until I didn't want
to anymore -- didn't really monitor time for battery life.

I didn't get the codec pack. I just transcode everything to xvid.
Works great, looks fantastic.

The only complaints:
 * the thing needs a kickstand so I can watch it without holding it on my lap
 * the audio output amplifier for the headphones was not enough to
keep up with my stock ipod headphones on a noisy boeing 777. but with
some etymotics isolating the noise (and being more sensitive), it was
just fine.
