I felt that way about it until I realized I could start moving the
menu cursor before the fade had finished. It doesn't really make
navigating any slower, as it turns out.
Fade performance was terrible on my SuSE systems until I gave up on
using the SuSE RPM package to install the NVIDIA drivers. For some
reason OpenGL doesn't work quite right unless I use the generic binary
packages from NVIDIA's site. Now the fade happens quite snappily on
both my GeForce 6200 and my old GeForce2 MX400.
