None of the above. I am no Linux hobbyist! I don't hate Microsoft, well, not
a lot :-) I simply needed a new DVR appliance that wan't Tivo or cable. When
I bought my original DVR, a Pioneer DVR-520, you could get them at
Crutchfield, Best Buy, etc. Nowadays Tivo and the cable companies have
killed the stand-alone DVR market completely and are sucking us dry every
month. I hate them both WORSE then Microsoft.

So my choices were Windows Mediacenter, Myth or getting a new grey market
DVR from the Canadian market, another Pioneer (it's the only one with good
editing and good recording ergonomics).

Myth seemed attractive because it provided a more appliance-like experience
but was still very flexible and because it doesn't respect DRM like the
Pioneer does. It was also rather inexpensive including the cost of a new
machine. Unfortunately after two months of fooling with it only now is it
approaching appliance-like reliability and ergo's. Still need to fix the
horrific menu structure and fix the strange problem with jerky playback that
requires a reboot every two days, assuming no other problems crop up.

Finally, for the Mrs. it became a trade-off between auto-commercial skip and
the piss-poor quality of the PVR150 encoder (remember that thread?) We were
"that" close to getting rid of the Myth box but auto-commercial skip
ultimately won out, with the hope that someday we'll have better encoder
hardware to choose from.
