On my frontend I launch a fluxbox session from my /etc/inittab (set up
to respawn). At the end of my ~/.fluxbox/startup I have it doing an
exec of mythfrontend. I have no taskbar or anything. It's like
having no WM at all, but there's no risk of things like focus issues
that you can encounter without any.

I personally (just my opinion) think Gentoo makes an awesome dedicated
mythtv box...especially for me given that I'm always running with some
sort of patches using my own custom overlay. I wonder sometimes if
Gentoo (and the total lack of things I don't need) explains why I'm
able to run the frontend and backend with only 528 MB of ram with no
issues. That's not to say you couldn't potentially make a fairly slim
install with *buntu.
