Yours was probably a P4 2.4 GHz whereas his is most likely a "Core 2 
duo" at 2.4 GHz (judging from his usage of the nonstandard term "intel 
duo core").

 From my own experience a P4 2.4 GHz was barely too slow, and a 2.4 GHz 
core2 duo can do it comfortably.
If you have a 3GHz C2d, you would have no need for XVMC I would think.
