[mythtv-users] Can't get mythfrontend to work with x11 rendering

I'm the lucky owner of a laptop with an ATI graphics chip (mobility firegl
5200), which ATI in their great wisdom, won't even support with their binary
fglrx driver (fglrx works but if you get XV or 3D, 2D becomes unusable, it's
a bug, but they couldn't care less because they refuse to support their
mobility chips).

Anyway, until I can upgrade to a version of the open source driver with
working Xv and 3D, I'm stuck with x11 rendering.

I can't get this to work with mythfrontend though. I did make a custom
playback profile TV Settings/Playback/Playback Profile that says:
if rez > 0 0 -> ffmpeg & xlib

In return, I get:

What does 
VideoOutputXv Error: XCreateImage failed
mean?
How could basic x11 output rendering fail? mplayer works fine with x11 on
that laptop.

BTW, the video does play back: I get sound, just no video.
