Alex, James, thanks very much for your replies. I am certainly learning more here!

I had no idea about all those things, so much to learn... From the manual of my motherboard:

"The board provides optional DVI-D interface with Intel 845GV, compliant with DVI 1.0 standard."

So, I guess it is DVI-D, which probably means that my earlier attempts to connect to my flatpanel using a DVI-to-VGA dongle were pretty much futile, but DVI->HDMI should work?

Would you normally expect DVI to HDMI to "just work" on my TV if I connect the cable, set the TV to the HDMI input, set BIOS to display on the DVI, and boot? Or would I have to do something else?

I will search for a non-upgrade windows CD and see if it works with the drivers from the manufacturer.. If not, I guess it is probably a hardware issue...

Yeah, I wasn't sure either but I connected them to the mobo and the DVI connector chip, that seemed to be the right thing to do...
