Clearly you didn't read what Jay referred you to. However, can you
tell us what the problem is?

You mention resolution. What resolution does it run at? What
resolution do you think it should run at? You can find out exactly
what resolution you are running at by running in a terminal

xwininfo -root

Is the problem with the laptop monitor or the external or both?

What have you tried? With what result?

When ubuntu installs it write a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf that has
the configuration for X. If that file doesn't give you any clues then
take a look at the X log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see if this
gives you any perspective on what is happening. (It tends to be long
and involved I'm sorry).
