I've seen the same thing.  Have you tried changing resolutions from the
command line after that happens using the 'xrandr' command?  I seem to
recall that that also fails, in which case this would be a bug in the
video driver, not a Myth bug.

I'm running nVidia 8776 (the last one to work right with 1080i and no
tearing on DVI output).
