I'd say you answered your own question. "Just about as fast" and "dang 
near more reliable" do not mean "faster" and "more reliable", just the 
opposite.

Especially for sustained transfers firewire is clearly better, though 
the difference might not be significant for a lot of users.

USB became more common because manufacturers hate to have to pay 
royalties to Apple.
