Do you have:
Option	    "UseEvents" "True"
in your xorg.conf?

I also have this section in mine and I know it didn't work without it:

Section "Module"
     Load           "dbe"
     Load           "extmod"
     Load           "fbdevhw"
     Load           "glx"
     Load           "record"
     Load           "freetype"
     Load           "type1"
