I'm just saying that the farther away something is the more likely you  
are to have problems accessing it. I like IMAP because the mail is  
stored on the server, not my local machine, and POP has problems if  
you access from more than one client.

If you want access to IMAP-stored mail all the time with maximum  
reliability the server should be on your local network. If you can  
accept the very occasional outage a remote server should be OK.

Gmail is a good service at a *very* fair price, but it is only one of  
the components of a complete system.
