First, I'm not sure what the quality of LCD panel lamps were 4 years
ago, but these days they should last a LOT longer than 4 years.
Projection LCD and DLP is an entirely different story and is more
inline with your failure time. However, components can fail anytime,
so it's not out of the question.
I imagine it's possible to design the system to turn off if the lamp
doesn't illuminate. For instance, some lights draw a lot of power when
starting up. If they fail to start up successfully, continuously
drawing a ton of power could be bad for the power supply, so they
might give up if it doesn't start in a second or two.
