I can't find anything in there that even hints at the possibility of
changing the command set.

But before you buy an MCE remote it's worth asking the cable company
if you can exchange one of the boxes. They should have something like
a Motorola DCT 2000-series box. It's older and, I've heard, a bit
slower than the one you have but it does digital cable and SD out. It
shouldn't cost any more (if anything) than the box they gave you, and
it should run a different command set.

If that fails, don't feel bad at all about buying the MS remote. It's
actually a very good piece of hardware. (I will rant and rave all
night about MS software but they do actually make pretty good
hardware. I've still got an early generation MS optical mouse that's
outlasted three Logitech mice.) The only thing that annoyed me about
the MS mouse was the honking big Windows logo on it. It turns out it
not that hard to replace it with Tux, or any logo of your choosing.
