after a bit mreo digging i found this post...

...it seems to be a conflict between ivtv and amd64 cpufreq.  after
removing cpufreq drivers from the kernel everything worked fine, though at
a much higher fan volume =).

however, your solution is much better, john.  thanks for the links,
wouldn't have thought to look for ivtv under another package name. 
portage wants to emerge ivtv again because of my use flags, i'll have to
figure out how to put a stub in.
