I'm not sure which sports bars you go to or which area you are from.  
I'm in NJ, USA (just across the river from Philadelphia).  We love 
sports here and every sports bar in the area (and even most restaurants) 
have HD displays with HD feeds for the Phillies/Flyers/Eagles/Sixers.

I suppose if you are in an area that doesn't love sports as much as the 
Philadelphia area does that may happen, but around here a sports bar 
stretching an SD feed on a 42" or greater plasma display would quickly 
find itself empty and out of business.
