    OTOH, once you've got this setup it should remain permanently
in your control and be something that you can update at will.

    It seems like something like this could be "bootstrapped" by
something that could be loaded onto the drive with dd much like
some of the Tivo hacks are handled. The "main hack" could just
be there to make it easy to install the distro of your choice
in a more normal fashion.

    Just a thought...
