cold start (going through a power down, sor example): The card loses
power and has an empty memory, firmware needs to be reloaded, not from
somewhere "magic", but usually from /lib/firmware (or another place
depending on your distro).

hot start (a reboot, for example): the card never loses power, so the
firmware does not need to be reloaded. It does not appear from anywhere
"magic", it is just still there, in the right place.
