Actually, you'll find that earthlink won't allow you to run a server
from your connection so what you're doing it circumventing their
rudimentary security in making sure people don't run web servers on
their home connections because it's against their terms of service.

Right. The terms of service when you use a hotel system generally says
something about only allowing certain ports for security reasons.

This happens in most of the service providers for hotels that I've
stayed in. This is not a Choice Hotels decision. It's the company
they've hired to provider their internet service. Again - most of them
do this.

The bottom line is that if you want to run a server without issue from
your home, get service that allows running servers. I have a
"Business" DSL line for $80/month that gives me 8 static IP addresses,
no port-blocking at all and unlimited traffic. This is a left-over
from when I worked solely from home and needed a constant VPN
connection to my main office across the country, but I kept it because
I like to run my own web servers and don't want to run into problems
like this.
