If you have ssh access try running irw and then pressing some buttons on
your remote to see if lirc is receiving events.

Also while the display is asleep ssh in and run this:

export DISPLAY=:0.0
xset q

The second command should tell you if the DPMS has been activated for
your display.

My system takes about 2-3 sec to wake once it is in sleep mode. I
normally press Up or Down on the remote twice wait a couple of secs and
I have my display back.
