I also set it up that way (direct ethernet port to ethernet port) at home
Just set the ethernet port address to 169.254.xxx.xxx/255.255.0.0.

In my case I set 169.254.1.10/255.255.0.0 with a broadcast of 
169.254.1.255 and no gateway. Restart your network then restart hdhr and 
it will find the mythtv ethernet port and set it's own address. Mythtv 
will then be able to locate your hdhr.

I don't have internet at home, so I had to install and setup mythtv at 
work and then take hdhr and my backend home.
