Furthermore, I address this side of the equation by selecting low-power
hardware to begin with. My main server, which is also my master backend,
is based on a Via C7 at 1.5GHz. Although this is very slow by today's
standards it is ample for what I need it for. I don't need my
mythcommflags to be fast, nor am I bothered about waiting for the
occasional kernel compile to finish. And I use frequency scaling.
My SATA interfaces are deliberately run at 1.5 Gbit/s although they are
capable of 3 Gbit/s. This is because they consume less power this way,
and also because I haven't been able to measure any appreciable
performance increase due to SATA2. (The PCI bus is the bottleneck on my
system).
My frontends are diskless, such that the disks connected to the main
server are the only disks in the house (except for laptops etc).
Etc.
