Do you use smartd? If so please observe while smartd is disabled 
(killall smartd or whatever) & take it from there.

BTW: I haven't been able to convince smartd to leave my sleeping disks 
alone, it insists on waking them up periodically. Not good, so I don't 
use smartd anymore.
