[mythtv-users] (1) mplayer video playback on frontend; (2) Ubuntu Nvidia issues?

Hi all -

I have a BE/FE in my family room running Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) and a FE up
in the bedroom running 8.10. Both are running the latest Myth 0.21 deb
packages and Nvidia binaries (the .debs).

Both still exhibit the occasional "tearing" phenomenon, both when playing
HD recordings with Myth's player, and videos (.avi, .mkv for example) with
mplayer (with optimized settings for multi-core processors, etc.) AND all
of the correct nvidia driver settings in xorg.conf and through
nvidia-settings. When the BE/FE box was running Mandriva 2008, it did NOT
have this problem. The only other difference is that it was running an
older Nvidia binary (100-something instead of 177-xx)...so I'd guess
that's probably the problem. Correct? Perhaps I should just wait for the
next one? I lifted the xorg.conf file directly from the Mandriva install
and only made (minor) changes necessary to get it to work under Ubuntu.

All else is copacetic on the BE/FE (Core2Quad at 2.4GHz).

On the FE (Core2Duo at 2.6GHz), I get occasional brief (1-2 second) pauses
in playback of videos, but NOT recordings. It is also using mplayer for
these files. I'm using a wired 100Mb/s network. I'm assuming that this
is an issue with mplayer, since Myth's internal player doesn't do it with
recordings. Anyone else run into this?

TIA
Bob
