You can test SPDIF with VLC quite easily, just by using "--spdif" (maybe 
that's only one dash) on the command line.

e.g.:
    vlc --spdif <myvideo.avi>

Or feed it a DVD with DD/DTS sound.

I would verify that SPDIF out is working before even attempting to get 
MythTV using it.
