as a data point there are a number of shows I do
import into the mythtv database but for the
most part I just tell the wife to go to the
play videos part instead of watch recordings
where I have set up the directory structure like

video: tv_shows/show_name/season/episode (title).avi

sometimes they are trainable to some extent on gadgets.
