At work I have 20 SATA HDs in a 5 or 6 year old AMD server board. But
more recently I have been using M2N boards similar to the one I posted
for servers. I have a few with 8 to 10 750GB drives in software raid6.
I am using AMD AM2 5500 processors and 4GB of Corsair or Gskill DDR2
memory on each machine. These easily handle 10 drives. I would make
sure you are using PCIe SATA controllers otherwise you will have poor
performance.
