OK, so I was able to get some response from the system today during livetv. 
It looks like the problem is the choice of OSD Renderer in the Playback 
Profile.  I'm using ia44blend, as it requires less resources.  For some 
reason, this doesn't render at all in LiveTV, but does in other modes 
(recordings, videos).

If I choose chromakey as the OSD Renderer, I get OSD, but the performance is 
poor.  Lots of stuttering, etc.

I'm going to have to try to figure out why the OSD doesn't get rendered in 
LiveTV mode, but does in others.
